Learning Objectives
To enable the student to understand the multifaceted aspects of the concept of quality in the context of production and services, developing the knowledge and understanding of the principles and methods for total quality management (TQM) and of the quantitative methodologies to support it, such as statistical process control and acceptance quality control (cc6).
To develop the knowledge of the most up-to-date technical standards in terms of quality management systems, their principles, the processes they describe and support (cc6).
To extend the knowledge and skills of quality management to the environmental management systems (cc6).
To provide students with the necessary knowledge to be able to participate in a company quality certification according to ISO 9000 standards, choosing and implementing quality control, defining appropriate procedures in compliance with the system certification standards and those required by regulation (ca4, ca5).
Provide students with the knowledge necessary to participate in an ISO 14000 environmental management system certification, performing an initial environmental analysis.
In pursuing the specific educational objectives of this teaching, the understanding of the systemic nature of the company organization and production systems will be strengthened with a view to problem solving (cc7), knowing the merits and limits of the methodologies learned (cc9) and their implications not only of technical-economic nature(cc10). The goal is to develop the ability to understand the constraints related to the product to be made and the technologies that can be used (ca6) to be able to choose and use the most appropriate methods for production and the most appropriate control tools (ca7) considering also the constraints not merely technical-economic (ca8).
At the end the course the student will be able to:
- Analyze the quality gap in product manufacturing and service providing.
- Establish sampling plans based on attributes or on variables. Design and use control charts.
- Roughly design a quality or environmental management system, assessing the compliance with the ISO 9001 or ISO 14001 standards
- Perform a preliminary environmental analysis

Type of Assessment
Middle term written examination for students attending the lectures, based on two main exercises: 1) Statistical Process Control (control charts) with connection to process capability and 2) Acceptance Quality Control, with the economic impact on process and products.
The written examination allows to assess knowledge and understanding of quantitative methodologies supporting quality management (cc6) and, above all, the skill to integrate knowledge and capabilities, developed along the degree courses, with those specific of this matter, by choosing and correctly implementing quality control (ca4 and ca5) in order to solve production engineering problems. The student can get the sufficient mark from this written examination, by solving at least the two main problems above, and this mark accounts for 50% of the whole final mark. The student can increase the mark, reaching the top score, by solving the additional exercises that requires a deeper preparation and more skills.
Students not attending the lectures, or that were not able to get a sufficient mark in the written examination, are assessed on the same knowledge and competences in a specific part of the oral examination that, even it does not present the solution of an exercise, will be able to point out the ability to set up the problem solution and demonstrate the knowledge of the methodology to solve it.
In the final oral examination for all the students, the questions will focus on the knowledge and understanding of principles and methodologies for Total Management of Quality (TQM), the knowledge of up-to-date technical standards, their principles, concerning quality, environment and safety (cc6).
In presenting the main elements of such approaches and the related standards, the student must demonstrate the understanding of the systemic nature of the company organization and of the production processes inside a problem solving view (cc7), taking into account product and technologies constraints (ca6), considering also the not merely technical-economic constraints.
