Description of soils, clay mineralogy, plasticity and particle size distribution. Basic relationships of phases. Soil classification. Principle of effective stress. Mohr's circles. Stresses on soil mass. Hydraulic properties of soils and flow of water through soil. One-dimensional consolidation theory, oedometric test. Shear strength of soils, Mohr-Coulomb-Terzaghi failure criterion. Laboratory and in situ soil testing. Critical state. Lateral earth pressure: active and passive earth pressures, Rankine's theory, Coulomb's equations. Bearing capacity of shallow foundations, settlements of shallow foundations, immediate, consolidation and creep settlements.
